McCain’s Christocrat

I argue at the Guardian that the issue with people Pastor Rod Parsley, he of copious spittle and sweat, isn’t really that he makes anti-Muslim sermons, but that he’s a political theocrat, for which I proffer evidence, and which is the real problem that McCain’s association with Parsley represents.

You raise some very good points. As a Christian I am always disturbed by those that want to blur Church/State thinking because history shows that it is always corrosive to the Church. I am also dissapointed to see McCain pandering to figures that he once had the sense to reject.

I’m posting these (and I posted them on CiF as well) because they’re along the same lines and people should at least have all of the facts before they smugly rush to condemn Obama or anyone else. McCain is proud of these associations. McCain was proud to speak at Jerry Falwell’s university. His reputation as a “maverick” or a “moderate” is such a hoax. Pander, pander, pander for those evangelical votes.

Ali, I don’t want to comment “there” so I hope you excuse me if I do so here?

I am a bit surprised by the casual way in which you talk about religious figures. I understand the point you’re making (a bit like Eco in the Name of the Rose) but, still, was disappointed by your post.

Really, what happens when subversiveness becomes the norm, when what Robert Hughes called ‘the shock of the new’ doesn’t shock any more?

I don’t get your point. Too fancy English.

Doesn’t matter, Ali. It wasn’t that great a point anyway; if you get it, you get it. And as they say in Lahore, if not , then not.
